Ancient Phoenician City of Lixus in Morocco to Undergo $1.5 Million Restoration

A new rehabilitation project for the Phoenician city of Lixus will be initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, requiring a budget of 15 million dirhams. 22 centuries old, the ancient city is a model of national historical heritage.
The Minister of Culture and Communication, Mohamed El Aaraj, announced that a budget of 6.75 million dirhams will be allocated to the maintenance and repair of the site, 4.6 million dirhams to enhancement and equipment, and 2.22 million dirhams to research and training. The promotion of the site will, however, require an envelope of just over one million dirhams.
The Ministry plans to work to have the site registered in the World Heritage list, through the transformation of the place into a center for scientific research and a destination for monumental and archaeological research programs, in addition to promoting the site as a cultural tourist destination, both nationally and internationally. Unique in its kind in Morocco, the Roman circular theater, one of the monuments of Lixus, will also be the subject of a rehabilitation.
Several construction sites will be launched by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, as part of the rehabilitation of monumental sites nationwide, in order to make them places of attraction capable of encouraging cultural and economic development, at the regional and national levels.
