Essaouira’s Historic Medina Undergoes Major Restoration to Boost Tourism and Preserve Heritage

The old Medina of Essaouira will soon have a new look. This is an initiative implemented thanks to the complementary program for rehabilitation and enhancement (2019-2023), the partnership and financing agreement of which was concluded in Marrakech in 2018.
This major project will allow the old Medina of Essaouira to gain attractiveness, gain a new reputation and contribute to the socio-economic development of the City of the Trade Winds by 2023, reports the MAP. Ultimately, it will develop the built environment of this museum-city and preserve its historical heritage and unique architectural character, thus contributing to improving the lives of merchants, craftsmen and residents of the city.
To achieve this and obtain a good result, the provincial authorities hold periodic meetings with the various services concerned and the stakeholders, in order to better monitor the progress of the work and operations implemented under this program and to avoid any error or delay. With a budget of 300 million dirhams, this program covers 26 projects and concerns four important points: the rehabilitation of the urban space, the restoration and enhancement of the historical heritage, the promotion of access to social services and the strengthening of the tourist and economic attractiveness of the old Medina of Essaouira.
