His son dies in an Agadir clinic, mother asked to pay 100,000 dirhams to release the body

The young man had been admitted after the sudden onset of worrying symptoms. According to his uncle, interviewed by Alyaoum 24, doctors allegedly diagnosed a dangerous virus that had reached his brain. He reportedly then lost consciousness and spent several days in a coma.

During his hospitalization, his relatives raised money to buy medication costing more than 5000 dirhams. The clinic eventually informed them of his death on Monday, August 24.

The family says it then discovered a bill amounting to nearly 100,000 dirhams. The establishment allegedly made the release of the body conditional on payment of this amount.

The clinic has not yet responded

The establishment concerned is not identified in the publication. Its management has therefore provided no account of the facts, and no intervention by the health or judicial authorities had been announced when the matter was revealed.

The mother, in her sixties, is reportedly living in difficult social circumstances. According to the family, her deceased son was her only financial support.

A previous ruling by the Fez Administrative Court had established that a hospital could not make the issuance of a death certificate conditional on payment of medical expenses. That case, however, concerned an administrative document rather than the release of a body.
