Halal: Five Guys, Quick, Pizza Hut... the fast-food chains are adapting in France

In addition to specialized brands, halal is now making its way into the major fast-food chains in France. But they are not all adopting the same strategy. While some have opted for 100% halal, others offer a partial offering, and others like McDonald’s do not plan to change their policy.

Six restaurants of the American chain Five Guys in France now offer halal: Lyon Part-Dieu, Clichy, Rosny 2, Créteil, Marseille and Lille. "Our restaurants are not Halal certified. However, the beef served in the restaurants listed below comes from Halal certified suppliers," the brand with the famous burgers indicates on its website. The chain also specifies that "these restaurants do not sell alcohol," adding that bacon remains available, but "cooked on a dedicated plate [...] to avoid any risk of cross-contamination."

Before Five Guys, other fast-food chains have gone halal. Quick has opted for 100% halal. The Swiss brand offers "a fully halal offering in all of its restaurants in France," reports Les Échos. The chain has made this shift since the early 2010s, when several of its Quick outlets had gone halal. In the burger sector, networks like G La Dalle, Black & White Burger or Point B have offered 100% halal since their creation.

On the pizza side, the option varies. Pizza Hut has opted for a partial offering. "Only the following ingredients and products are halal: merguez, chicken strips and breaded chicken tenders (Chicken Tasty)," the brand specifies. The rest of the menu is not halal certified. Conversely, Pizza Time, Pizz’Alif or Five Pizza Original offer fully halal.

For its part, McDonald’s does not plan to offer halal. In late October, the American chain denied rumors on TikTok announcing a change in its policy. The chain recalls that it does not "implement community-specific offerings." However, McDonald’s does offer halal meat in some countries where demand is high, such as Morocco, Turkey or Saudi Arabia. Burger King and KFC do not offer halal in France. "At KFC, the chicken served is not halal certified, as our mission is to offer a universal offering," the brand states on its official website.

In some segments like chicken, halal has already become the norm. Chicken Street, Chicken Time or Poulet Braisé display a 100% halal offering. On the taco side, O’Tacos indicates that "all our meats are 100% halal certified." The same is true at Chamas Tacos. Nevertheless, the halal offering in fast food is neither marginal nor uniform: it primarily reflects the strategic choices of each chain.
