Halal Brand’s Carrefour Deal Sparks Muslim Boycott Backlash

Carrefour announced on Thursday, September 11, the acquisition of 10% of the capital of HMarket for around 10 million euros. The announcement provoked an avalanche of reactions from members of the Muslim community who have called for a boycott of the halal brand.
For the influencer Hattek who calls for a boycott of HMarket, the brand has crossed the Rubicon by opening its capital to Carrefour, which is already subject to several boycotts in France and in many Muslim countries due to its support for Israel. The French retail giant has been forced to close its stores in Kuwait, Jordan, Oman and Bahrain, and could also soon leave Tunisia or Saudi Arabia where it faces calls for a boycott, reports Oumma.
Even before this Carrefour stake, several influencers had called for a boycott of HMarket after noting the presence of Carrefour-branded products on the shelves of some of its stores. For its part, the halal brand is trying to reassure consumers, explaining that this partnership with Carrefour is only aimed at growth objectives. But consumers fear that HMarket may pay the price of a collaboration with a group that is already boycotted and increasingly contested.
