German Tourist Reports Extortion by Taxi Drivers in Agadir, Morocco

A German tourist claims that grand taxi drivers pursued, threatened and extorted foreign tourists traveling in an ordinary car in Tamraght, on the way to Taghazout. Exasperated, she filed a complaint with the Wali of the Souss-Massa region, governor of the prefecture of Agadir Ida-Outanane.

According to the complaint of which Achkayn has a copy, while the German tourist was on September 10th, accompanied by her friends, around 9:00 pm, in an ordinary car in Tamraght, on the way to Taghazout, three grand taxis (whose numbers she mentioned) started chasing them near the intersection near the royal gendarmerie. Subsequently, the drivers of these vehicles surrounded them, accusing the driver of their car of using the (InDrive) application, recounts the complainant, adding that they began to extort them, threaten them, and prevented them from continuing on their way. According to her account, they held them for an hour and a quarter, from 9:00 pm to 10:15 pm, continuing to extort them and demanding a sum of money to let them go, extracting 400 dirhams from them without any legal basis.

The complainant condemns the behavior of these taxi drivers, which is contrary to the requirements of the license and the professional conduct required of a professional driver, and which tarnishes the image of the sector. The German tourist asks the Wali of the Souss-Massa region, governor of the prefecture of Agadir Ida-Outanane, Saïd Amzazi, to intervene to sanction the persons concerned and to "take all the measures he deems necessary in accordance with the law."

Situations of confrontation and pursuit between taxi drivers and transport professionals using applications used by customers are legion in the Souss-Massa region in general, and the tourist areas near the city of Agadir in particular.
