A French submarine discovered in Morocco

A page of history resurfaces from the depths of the Atlantic. Researchers have located the wreck of the French submarine Méduse, sunk off the Moroccan coast in November 1942. A major discovery that sheds new light on the remains of World War II in the waters of the Kingdom.

The submarine had sunk during Operation "Torch", the massive Allied landing in North Africa aimed at opening a new front against the Axis forces. This pivotal moment in the global conflict had transformed the Moroccan coastline into a theater of intense naval operations, resulting in the loss of many vessels.

While the wreck had been briefly explored by French researchers in the 1950s, it had then disappeared from scientific radar. It is thanks to a joint research program between the Ministry of Culture and the Royal Gendarmerie, aimed at mapping the national underwater heritage, that the Méduse has been formally identified.
