Former PJD Leader Benkirane Faces Pressure to Run in Morocco’s Legislative Elections

Will the former Secretary General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), Abdelillah Benkirane, be a candidate or not in the next legislative elections in Salé? He claims to want to leave the place to the young people, but the temptation is too strong.
The question of Benkirane’s candidacy would still be under discussion, according to Slimane El Omrani, the Deputy Secretary General of the PJD. For Hassan Hammour, president of the Central Committee of the Youth of the Islamist party, the party’s general secretariat would have rejected on Tuesday during its meeting, the refusal of the former secretary general to run in these elections in his stronghold of Salé.
Benkirane had stated that he would not run in the next legislative elections after being appointed as head of the list in the electoral constituency of Salé by the local general assembly of the party.

Invited on Tuesday to the MAP Forum, he assured that not all candidacies had yet been validated. El Othmani stressed on the occasion that there are no tensions within the PJD, "a democratic party in which the opinions of everyone are respected".
