Former Marrakech Deputy Mayor Sentenced to 18 Months for Fraud and Abuse of Power

Hamid Chehouani, one of the deputies to the former mayor of Marrakech, was sentenced on Monday to 18 months in prison and a fine of 5,000 dirhams for "fraud, abuse of authority and failure to report a crime."

The Attorney General of the Court of First Instance in Marrakech had requested five years in prison against the former collaborator of Mohamed Larbi Belcaid, reports the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, specifying that the verdict was handed down late Monday night, after a hearing that lasted nearly ten hours.

The judge decided to sentence the former deputy to 18 months in prison and pay 50,000 dirhams to a certain Y. M. The other people involved in this case were acquitted. The case came to light after the wilaya of the region filed a complaint against Chehouani, accused of abuse of authority. He would have promised a woman to use his power to find a position as an authority agent for her son, in exchange for 30,000 dirhams.

Meanwhile, the former mayor, Mohamed Larbi Belcaid, and another of his deputies, Younes Benslimane, were also prosecuted in another case of misappropriation of public funds. The two elected officials would have made several contracts worth 280 million DH win to a certain H. Z., a renowned businessman in the ochre city, as part of the organization of the Marrakech Conference 2016 on climate change (COP 22).
