Former Fez Mayor Faces Legal Scrutiny Amid Corruption Allegations, Remains Abroad

The former mayor of Fez, Hamid Chabat, will have to explain himself before the courts for the many cases of irregularities noted in the management of the municipality. However, he is not in the country, and has no intention of returning.
Mismanagement of the cleanliness, transport and housing sectors, a file of falsification of development plans under investigation at the Fez Court of Appeal, influence peddling... The cases in which the former mayor of Fez, Hamid Chabat, would be involved, are numerous.
These cases came to light following the investigation opened regarding the falsification of development plans, say sources to Assabah. The same sources reveal that nineteen people, including the former head of the urban planning and environment division at the Fez wilaya, a former MP who was at the head of the urban planning department at the municipality, an Istiqlal party councilor in the Al Marinyine district and real estate developers, would be involved in this case.
Hamid Chabat, who would also be involved in many other files, was summoned to his address in the Bensouda district, which he had left for months, to settle in Turkey. Since then, he no longer returns to Morocco. He was absent from the funeral of his sister, in Taza, and the baptism of his granddaughter. Everything suggests that the outgoing mayor of Fez intends to evade justice. In this case, justice will resort to an international rogatory commission.
