Former Istiqlal Party Leader Returns to Morocco After Two-Year Exile

After spending two years in Turkey, the former boss of the Istiqlal party, Hamid Chabat, is back in Morocco. His supporters are firmly convinced that he has returned to regain the Fez town hall, lost to the PJD’s El Azami.
The former boss of the Istiqlal party had left Morocco after losing his positions as secretary general of the PI and the UGMT trade union center. The reason for his return to Morocco last Wednesday would be the recovery of the Fez town hall, currently occupied by the PJD’s Driss El Azami, proclaim his supporters loudly, who are urging him to speak out on the issue, in order to bring them their massive support, indicates the daily Assabah.
On this, continues the same source, Chabat has not yet opened up to the party leadership, where he still holds his place, since the Istiqlal leaders are not accustomed to exclusions, according to certain sources. Same position in the House of Representatives, where he has produced medical certificates justifying his long absence from the work.
To recall, before leaving for Turkey, Hamid Chabat had been tough on Benkirane, whom he did not forgive for having sidelined his party when forming his government. He admits, in the company of certain leaders, including the former secretary general of the Pam, Ilyass El Omari, to have worked to prevent Benkirane from being head of government a second time.
Ilyass El Omari had also resigned from the presidency of the party and that of the Tanger-Tétouan-El Hoceima region, before later leaving the country.
