Former Ajax Prodigy Mohamed Ihattaren Makes Long-Awaited Return to Dutch Football

After more than two years of absence, Mohamed Ihattaren made his comeback on Sunday. The Moroccan-born player of RKC came on the field during the match against his former club, Ajax (0-2).
Lined up as a substitute for this match, Ihattaren came on the field in the 80th minute. His last professional match dates back to May 6, 2022. At the time, he was playing for Ajax. The midfielder then went through a downward spiral. He tried to relaunch his career at Samsunspor and Slavia Prague. Without success.
In recent months, Ihattaren has prepared his comeback. The 22-year-old player has been followed by a psychiatrist and has benefited from the support of a coaching team. On September 19, he signed with RKC for a season, with the possibility of renewal. "I am grateful that they are giving me this opportunity," said the Dutch player of Moroccan origin during his presentation.
Ihattaren is happy to return to the pitch after 878 days of pause and hopes to gradually regain his great form. "I hope I can get a little closer to my old level each week," he said to ESPN after the match against Ajax on Sunday, wishing to "accumulate playing time and play 90 minutes as soon as possible."
The RKC coach is satisfied with Ihattaren’s performance. "Congratulations to those who have worked with him, because his basic physical condition is very good. But he needs to be integrated gradually. We don’t want him to get injured. His influence on the group is fantastic. I see his determination, his passion..." said Henk Fraser.
