Dutch Snub Opens Door for Ihattaren's Potential Morocco Switch

The international future of Mohamed Ihattaren remains uncertain. The midfielder was not included in the pre-selection of the Netherlands Under-21 team, opening the door to a possible selection with Morocco.

A return of Ihattaren under the Oranje jersey had been mentioned by ESPN. The media announced a possible call-up for the Euro U21. However, the official list, published on Friday, did not include the player’s name. Journalist Thijs Zwagerman had nevertheless pointed out that "the KNVB (Dutch Football Association) has recently sounded out Ihattaren [...] testifies to the confidence" in him. He added that coach Michael Reiziger "strongly wishes" to integrate him into his group.

Six years after initially choosing to represent the Netherlands, Ihattaren finds himself at a crossroads. Mike Verweij, a journalist at Telegraaf, revealed that "Morocco is also putting strong pressure on him". Verweij recalled the player’s "conscious choice" for the Oranje, while indicating that a lack of call-up could lead him to reconsider his position.

The case of Hakim Ziyech, who opted for Morocco after being neglected by the Netherlands, is mentioned. Verweij criticized the KNVB’s attitude, highlighting the lack of direct contact with Ihattaren, despite an observation during a match.

Verweij considers that a choice of Morocco by Ihattaren would represent a "snub" for the Netherlands. Valentijn Driessen, a journalist at Telegraaf, hypothesized a lack of trust from the KNVB towards the player. He also highlighted the potential repercussions of a Moroccan offer, stating that a refusal by Ihattaren "would provoke a strong reaction within this community". The final decision will therefore rest with the player.
