FIFA Credits Morocco’s Opening Goal Against Belgium to Romain Saiss
Tuesday 29 November 2022, by
The goal that allowed the Atlas Lions to open the scoring against the Belgian Red Devils was not awarded to Abdelhamid Sabiri, but to his teammate Romain Saiss.
FIFA has reversed its decision regarding the first goal, which allowed Walid Regragui’s protégés to gain confidence against Belgium. In the 73rd minute, with the counter stuck at 0-0, Abdelhamid Sabiri magnificently shot a free kick into the top corner.
The goal was first awarded to him. After verification and several slow-motion replays, the decision was made to change the scorer on the match sheet. The international football body has ultimately credited the goal to his teammate Romain Saiss, considering that the latter touched the ball.
It should be recalled that Zakaria Aboukhlal doubled the lead in the final minutes of added time to give a precious victory to the Atlas Lions. He was very well served by his teammate Hakim Ziyech. Next appointment, Thursday against Canada. A Moroccan victory will send them to the round of 16.
