Ferry Collision Rocks Algeciras Port: Baleària Vessel Damaged in Docking Mishap
The ferry Cecilia Payne of the Baleària company coming from Ceuta hit the quay of the port of Algeciras on Sunday while trying to dock, causing visible damage to one side of the boat. No injuries were reported.
According to witnesses, the ship coming from Ceuta hit the quay during a docking maneuver. No injuries were reported among the passengers and crew, but the boat suffered visible damage on one of its sides, reports El Faro de Ceuta.
The port authority of the Bay of Algeciras has activated the safety protocol provided for in this type of incident. Technical personnel went to the site to assess the damage and check that there is no risk of fuel leakage or structural damage compromising the safety of the port.
The Balearia company plans to open an internal investigation to determine the exact causes of this collision. The passengers, who were about to disembark, were held on board for a few minutes for safety reasons, before being allowed to leave the ferry.
After the incident, operations at the port of Algeciras continued normally. As for the ferry Cecilia Payne, it will remain under technical review before resuming its usual trips on the Ceuta-Algeciras line. Another ship will be chartered to ensure the continuity of the service.
