Explosion at Moroccan Dam Site Traps Workers Underground

A violent explosion shook the construction site of the Mokhtar Soussi dam elevation, located in the commune of Ouzioua, province of Taroudant.
The incident occurred in a tunnel - a cave according to some sources - where two workers and two supervisors were working at a depth of nearly 300 meters.
According to the first information gathered, contact was abruptly lost with the team after an explosion heard outside the tunnel. The local authorities, immediately alerted, dispatched elements of the Royal Gendarmerie and firefighters to the scene. Search operations were launched in the hope of finding survivors.
Among the missing would be the uncle of Lahcen Essaadi, the Secretary of State for Crafts. For now, the causes of the explosion remain unknown. An investigation has been opened to shed light on the circumstances of this tragedy.
