About four months ago, the Rabat Zoological Garden saw the birth of five new Atlas lion cubs, belonging to a species extinct in the wild. They add to the 29 lions already living on the 25 hectares of this space.

Rosy and Tazyka are the two Atlas lionesses who gave birth to the five cubs in November 2021. Left with their mothers in the cat house, they are exposed to the general public. Their acclimatization is ensured by a team of experienced veterinarians. For one of the managers of the garden, it is a source of pride for the entire team to see the Atlas lion family grow with these five cubs, reports SNRTnews.

"The Atlas lion is considered one of the most important lion species. Currently we have 34, which makes the Rabat National Zoological Park the largest reservoir of Atlas lions on an international scale," the official proudly says.

The Rabat Zoological Garden ensures the regular reproduction of the core of more than thirty lions in order to preserve this heritage. The park also has a multi-level conservation program. "It is about improving animal welfare, rationalizing reproduction and the last level concerns scientific research and studies that we are conducting for a better enhancement of the Atlas lion."

Barely exposed, the cubs are already receiving visitors. Among them, curious students who came in large numbers to see this new generation of cubs. Everyone agrees on the importance of protecting this endangered species. The last Atlas lion was observed in the wild in 1942 in the Tizi n’Tichka region.
