TikTok Marriages Spark Outrage in Morocco: Sacred Unions Turned Viral Spectacle

In Morocco, human rights actors and specialists in family issues express their deep concern about the spread of the phenomenon of "TikTok marriages," which they consider as opportunities for exhibition and video spectacle, emptying marriage of its sacred character.
The Ajial Al Ghad Association has denounced these practices of "systematic distortion" of the institution of marriage, undermining the image of women and men. In a statement, it declared that these live-streamed TikTok marriages contribute to the trivialization and desacralization of the institution of marriage, emptying these unions of their human, emotional or social value and leaving in the minds of young people and adolescents a reductive perception of the concept of family and union. The association noted a spread of this phenomenon beyond the Moroccan borders, affecting Moroccan communities living abroad who participate in these live marriages.
The practice had begun on YouTube, where engagement ceremonies were broadcast without, however, falling into the "indecent spectacle" that is witnessed on TikTok. These live unions resemble public auctions where the dignity of women is traded, and where religious values are trampled through superficial interpretations, observed a member of the Ajial Al Ghad Association, stressing that some sermons have alluded to forced marriage or polygamy, which could threaten the psychological and ethical balance of young people.
The use of the Chinese platform to celebrate marriages not only harms the sacredness of marriage, but also empties this social network of all educational and responsible content, specifies the official, calling for increased monitoring of the content broadcast on TikTok and undermining the moral and cultural balance of the Moroccan family. The official also indicated that his association is preparing a detailed report on this phenomenon, which will be transmitted to the competent authorities. He stressed the importance of integrating digital education into school curricula in order to preserve moral values.
