Two earthquakes in a few hours in Morocco: what the experts say

According to data from the National Institute of Geophysics (ING), the first earthquake occurred on Wednesday evening at 11:43 pm. With a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale, its epicenter was located in the commune of Ain Karma-Oued Rommane, at a depth of 11 km. Although some international sources have downgraded the magnitude (3.3), the shock was clearly felt by the population. A second, weaker shock (magnitude 2.7) was recorded this morning at 8:05 am.

For Nasser Jabour, director of the ING, these seismic movements are explained by the "reactivation of the geological faults" in the region, a classic process occurring after a period of seismic calm. The expert also points out that this activity is part of a broader dynamic: several areas of the Kingdom have been experiencing similar adjustments since the major earthquake in the High Atlas in 2023. The authorities confirm that there are no casualties or material damage to report.
