Hidden Destruction": Canary Islands Flood Moroccan Market With Bananas

Facing plummeting prices and summer surpluses, banana producers from the Canary Islands have found an alternative to destroying their fruit. In 2025, Morocco absorbed the vast majority of their international exports.

The year 2025 was marked by the lowest commercialized banana production in at least ten years for the Canary Islands, with 374.7 million kilos sold. While the Iberian peninsula absorbs the overwhelming majority of this volume (87%), shipments beyond Spanish borders reached 5.2 million kilos. Of this total, 3.6 million headed toward the kingdom.

As revealed by Spanish media eldiario.es, Morocco has established itself as a heavyweight ally. The fruit first transits through mainland Spain before crossing the strait. This dynamic is not based on strong profitability, but rather serves as a safety valve when prices collapse at the source, sometimes leading to sales at a loss, particularly during summer.

Sources within the sector explain that the volumes shipped to Morocco correspond to goods withdrawn from main markets during price drops. This is in reality a "hidden destruction" or a logistical mechanism allowing Spain to evacuate an oversupply of goods.

This strategy has allowed the professional association Asprocan to modify its official reports. Unlike 2024, when 7.5 million kilos were withdrawn from commercial circuits without finding buyers, no losses of this type were recorded last year. The Moroccan market, which represents 70% of the sector’s international sales, has supplanted Europe, where only Switzerland stands out with 1.1 million kilos imported.
