Death of Sion Assidon: Morocco loses a great patriot
The Moroccan human rights activist and figurehead of the "BDS Morocco" movement, Sion Assidon, passed away this Friday, November 7. He had been in a coma for several weeks after being found in critical condition at his home last August.
The deceased was one of the best-known Jewish figures in Morocco for his constant commitment to the Palestinian cause and his opposition to normalization with Israel. He regularly participated in many demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people.
A criminal investigation had been ruled out
The discovery of his condition had caused a strong reaction on social media. In August, the King’s Attorney General at the Casablanca Court of Appeal had detailed the circumstances of the case. The investigation had begun on August 11, 2025, when two of his employees, concerned about his absence, had alerted the police.
The judicial police services had then gone to his home. After opening the locked door, they had found Sion Assidon lying unconscious on a sofa, but still alive. He had been immediately taken to the hospital to receive the necessary care.
The initial findings had revealed no signs of forced entry or disorder in the house. However, the investigators had found various gardening tools (ladder, saw, pruning shears) in the garden, as well as remains of cut herbs, suggesting that he was doing some pruning work before the incident.
This accidental hypothesis had been confirmed by the recordings of a surveillance camera. The video showed the person of interest arriving alone at his home on August 9, wearing the same clothes in which he was found. No other person had entered the house until his discovery. Laboratory analyses had also confirmed that the fingerprints and biological samples collected at the scene belonged exclusively to the victim.
