Sion Assidon to be buried on Sunday in Casablanca in strict family privacy
Human rights activist Sion Assidon, who died on Friday, November 7 from complications following a domestic accident that occurred last August and a long coma, will be buried this Sunday in strict family privacy.
In a statement, the family of the illustrious deceased announced that his funeral will take place this Sunday, November 9, 2025 at 1 pm, at the Jewish cemetery in Casablanca, in strict family privacy. The family wishes for a quiet burial, away from any political expression or demonstration of solidarity.
Sion Assidon had been admitted to a clinic in Mohammedia, then transferred to the Cheikh Khalifa International University Hospital in Casablanca where he remained in intensive care for several months. His condition had improved in recent weeks, before deteriorating due to an acute lung infection that led to his death.
Several friends and human rights activists have called for an investigation to determine the exact cause of his death. The public prosecutor’s office at the Casablanca Court of Appeal indicated that according to the autopsy, Sion Assidon died from infectious complications related to a traumatic head injury after a probable fall down the stairs at his home.
Sion Assidon was one of the most prominent figures in human rights activism in Morocco. Founder of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS Morocco) movement, the deceased was a fervent defender of the Palestinian cause and was also involved in several civil organizations fighting against corruption and human rights violations.
