Deadly Violence Erupts After Moroccan Soccer Match: 1 Killed, 5 Injured

Following a football match between Wydad de Casablanca and AS FAR de Rabat, clashes between supporters left one dead and five injured.
The victory of AS FAR de Rabat was not to the liking of the supporters of the Wydad de Casablanca club, beaten by a score of 1-3, as part of a Coupe du Trône match. It was in this context that a group of Wydad de Casablanca supporters intercepted a vehicle transporting AS FAR de Rabat fans, throwing stones at it, before the situation degenerated into clashes, according to an official statement.
According to the same source, five injured people were taken to the hospital and one person died after falling from the top of the vehicle. Subsequently, six people were arrested for their alleged involvement in this violence, the authorities said.
The day after the clashes, the police said that 22 supporters, including five minors, had been arrested for "possession of flares, bladed weapons [...] glass bottles and sticks" that they "were trying to bring into the stadium" before the match.
In 2016, two fans had died in March during clashes between football supporters. Realizing the situation, the authorities had dissolved supporter groups and banned any distinctive signs (slogans and banners) in the stadiums. However, the presence of "ultras" was authorized again in March 2018.
