Death Threats Mar Champions League Clash: Wydad Fans Face Tension in Tunisia

The atmosphere is likely to be electric between the supporters of Espérance de Tunis and those of Wydad de Casablanca. And for good reason, the supporters of Espérance de Tunis have made death threats against the Wydad fans traveling to Tunisia to support their club against Etoile Sportive du Sahel, as part of the return leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Arabic-language daily Al Akhbar reports that the supporters of the red and white club received threats from some "Espérantist" supporters, on the eve of their match against Etoile Sportive du Sahel. This observation was made on social media pages close to ES Tunis. It seems that the wounds are not completely healed with regard to the affair of the Champions League final in Radès, in May 2019 between the two clubs.

The Moroccan authorities in Tunis, having taken the death threats seriously, have notified the Tunisian authorities to inform them of the dangerous nature of these threats, and especially to urge them to take measures for the safety of the Moroccans who will be in Tunis. The Tunisian Minister of Youth and Sports has assured that the supporters of Wydad and those of Zamalek will be protected.

To avoid any possible clashes with the fans of Espérance de Tunis, the Wydad supporters have been invited by the Tunisian authorities not to go out alone or wear the colors of their team. The Arabic-language daily reports that Wydad had to delay its trip to Tunis by a day.
