CAS Upholds Espérance’s African Champions League Title, Rejects Wydad Appeal

Wydad of Casablanca was dismissed from the appeal filed against the decision of the Confederation of African Football to award the 2019 African Champions League title to Espérance Sportive de Tunis.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which had refused, in July, the proposal of the CAF Executive Committee to replay the match on neutral ground, considered that the Casablanca club had indeed left the field.
The international body thus puts an end to the long saga of Rades, by confirming the Tunisian club in its position as 2019 African champion, while the Wydad will have to bear the costs related to the case.
On May 31, 2019, the Wac of Casablanca had faced the Espérance of Tunis in Rades, for the second leg final of the 2018-2019 Champions League. At the 58th minute, the Casablanca club had refused to resume the course of the match, following the cancellation of a goal by referee Bakary Gassama.
