Deadly Fire in Fez Medina Kills 4, Injures 26 in Historic Marketplace

A fire ravaged Quisaria Dabbagh in the medina of Fez on Wednesday evening. The toll has risen to four dead and 26 injured, according to local authorities.
Among the injured, ten people suffer from serious burns and were taken to the university hospital center of Fez. The other injured, victims of asphyxiation, received care in the hospitals of the city.
The fire caused significant material damage, affecting about 25 shops. According to preliminary information, the cause of the fire would be an electrical short circuit that occurred during renovation work in one of the businesses.
An investigation has been opened under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office to determine the exact circumstances of the fire and establish the responsibilities.
