Daring Heist: Million-Dirham Bank Robbery Shocks Rural Morocco
Elements of the Royal Gendarmerie are conducting an investigation after the spectacular robbery of a bank branch in the rural commune of Jemaâ Shaim, in the province of Safi. The burglars made off with 1 million dirhams.
Criminals broke into a branch of Al Barid Bank, located in the rural commune of Jemaâ Shaim, over the past weekend when the staff was absent. The bank had been closed since Friday. They then drilled through a wall to access the director’s on-site accommodation, where a safe was located. They stole 1 million dirhams intended to supply the branch’s ATM.
It was only on Monday morning that the bank staff discovered the theft and alerted the elements of the royal gendarmerie. They arrived on the scene and opened an investigation. They are currently reviewing the surveillance camera images in order to collect clues and identify the perpetrators of this robbery, the number of which remains unknown.
