Cockroach Scandal Exposes Rabat’s Restaurant Regulation Failures
A restaurant in Rabat has remained open despite a closure order issued after the broadcast of a video showing a cockroach in a dish. The non-application of this measure has provoked the reaction of several civil society organizations, who invoke public health reasons.
Following the customer’s complaint, the mayor of Rabat signed the closure order and transmitted it to the wilaya for execution. However, the decision remains without effect to this day and the establishment continues its activity.
The Moroccan Association for Human Rights denounced in a press release the "slowness of the execution of the closure decision", seeing it as "an attack on the citizen’s confidence in the institutions". It called on the wali to enforce the closure and strengthen health controls.
Another association denounced the "absence of any concrete interaction on the part of the authorities". On the legal level, it criticizes the postponement on two occasions of the appearance of the owner, while an employee’s testimony on the proliferation of insects is considered a "serious confession requiring an immediate rendering of accounts".
The associations say they are following the case, calling for an acceleration of the procedures and threatening "protest measures" if this "unjustified abandonment" persists. They warn about the risks to Morocco’s international reputation as major events approach.
