Charleroi Airport Closure 2028: Morocco Routes Affected

Charleroi Airport will completely suspend traffic for several months in the second half of 2028. The Belgian-Moroccans accustomed to using this platform to reach Morocco will have to temporarily turn to other airports.

This closure will allow for the renovation of the single runway at Brussels South Charleroi Airport and the simultaneous completion of several modernization projects. The precise schedule and exact duration of the shutdown have not yet been announced.

According to Belga, the Walloon Airport Company wants to consolidate the various construction projects to reduce the overall duration of disruptions. This organization will nevertheless require a complete suspension of takeoffs and landings throughout the affected period.

For the many travelers departing from Charleroi to Morocco, the closure will result in a shift to other platforms. The airlines will have to reorganize their schedules, temporarily relocate certain routes or suspend them until reopening.

Unions are already concerned about the future of destinations served from Charleroi. Alain Goelens, representative of the Setca, asks what guarantees will allow the airport to recover all its routes after the work. He also denounces the lack of clarity surrounding the income of employees who may be placed on economic unemployment.
