Liège Airport: The last flight to Tangier marks the end of an era for Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs)
A major blow for the Moroccan community in Wallonia and travelers in the region. The Liège (Bierset) airport is ceasing its passenger activities. The very last plane took off on January 4 towards Tangier, leaving behind an empty terminal and travelers orphaned from their nearby connections.
This is a strong symbol. The curtain has fallen on the passenger terminal of Liège with a final flight to Morocco. After the departure of this plane for Tangier last Sunday, no more regular flights are scheduled for 2026. An unprecedented situation that directly penalizes the many Moroccans residing in the Liège region, used to using this "human-sized" airport to return to their country.
The reason for this stoppage is the definitive withdrawal of the TUI fly company. Present for 31 years on the Liège tarmac, it provided popular connections to Morocco, Turkey or Spain. The group justified this decision by a lack of profitability, preferring to regroup its activities elsewhere.
For travelers in the region, it’s the end of comfort. Goodbye to the quick boarding just a stone’s throw from home. The MREs of the province of Liège will now have to fall back on the airports of Brussels-Zaventem, Maastricht or Charleroi to reach the Kingdom. An alternative that does not delight everyone, some passengers considering these platforms too large or saturated.
