Changes Coming to Moroccan Driver’s License

The National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) is currently testing examination vehicles qualified as "smart cars." Called "Smart Drive Test," this system relies on tablets, sensors, and embedded software. These tools analyze the candidate’s driving in real time, detect errors, and automatically assign the final score without any human intervention.

The main purpose of this reform is to make evaluation completely neutral. In an interview with the daily newspaper Le Matin, the president of the Moroccan Federation of Driving Schools, Mustapha El Haji, recalls that current exams face numerous criticisms. This automation should help eliminate suspicions of favoritism and scoring discrepancies between different centers across the country.

Despite this technological advancement, sector representatives consider this rollout premature. Currently, only 20 of Morocco’s 74 examination centers have adequate closed tracks. The vast majority of candidates take their practical test directly on public roads, amid traffic. These real-world conditions make the use of computer-based evaluation extremely complex.

Professionals are therefore demanding the modernization of under-equipped centers before these smart vehicles arrive. They are calling for dignified and identical examination conditions for all candidates across the entire territory. At this stage, the project remains in simple trial phase and authorities have not communicated any official date for its implementation.
