Celebrity Chef's Couscous Recipe Sparks Controversy on Social Media

On YouTube and Tiktok, the French Michelin-starred chef Philippe Etchebest is under fire for his couscous recipe, an iconic North African dish, which has nothing to do with what is prepared in Morocco.

Is the couscous recipe that Philippe Etchebest has published on his YouTube channel a hoax? On the web, this recipe from the presenter of the French version of the TV show "Kitchen Nightmares" is far from unanimous. The criticisms are pouring in from all sides. "Oh, chef! I adore you and I totally respect you, but no, this is not a couscous," comments an Internet user under the video of the famous chef. Many Internet users have expressed their disappointment.

"Chef, you’re playing a joke on us," @inescious jokes on Tiktok. She, who describes herself on her profile as "the couscous police," shows the French chef the ingredients he needs to prepare an authentic couscous. She did not hesitate to make fun of Philippe Etchebest who placed two large pieces of butter in his casserole dish. "If you can add a little olive oil. No, I’m just saying that, chef. And the more it goes on, the worse it gets. Chef, your couscous is more bare than a newborn baby, this story is not going to work at all," the Tiktoker says ironically (but not too much either). She pushes the joke: "Tell me there’s a couscous maker hiding behind your back, please." Well... no!

"In Algeria, you risk 24 hours in custody with this recipe," comments an Internet user on the Chinese network. "For once that the whole Maghreb agrees, he has put us all in distress," continues another. "He destroyed the couscous... Our ancestors are very disappointed." The comments follow one another. "Chef, I’m from Kabylia, I invite you to come and savor our couscous." "I can’t take it anymore, respect is over" "With this dish, Philipe Etchebest has ruined his career." "What a kitchen nightmare! I invite you to take a training course to make a traditional couscous," dare other users. "It’s a shame. This is not a couscous, it’s a vegetable semolina."

The couscous purists have also criticized Philippe Etchebest. "With all the respect I have for your incredible career and your talent as a great chef, I take the liberty of sharing a disagreement concerning your way of preparing the couscous," confides Patrick in a comment. Massi is also disappointed: "It’s a bit of a shame for a chef of your reputation, whom I greatly admire by the way, to see you prepare the semolina like this! A nice and good semolina steamed, in a couscous maker." "Couscous with butter? Great! I’m waiting for the recipe for the cassoulet with crème fraîche and the pot-au-feu with Nutella," another gets annoyed.
