Casablanca Waste Crisis: Authorities Demand Daily Monitoring

Faced with the accumulation of garbage in several neighborhoods of Casablanca, wali Mohamed Mhidia convened an urgent meeting. He strongly criticized cleaning companies and ordered daily monitoring of the service.

The multiplication of complaints from residents provoked the anger of authorities. Mohamed Mhidia, wali of Casablanca-Settat, brought together the governors of prefectures and sector officials to assess the deterioration of cleanliness in the economic capital.

According to sources cited by Al3omk, the wali deemed unacceptable the images of waste accumulated in several streets and alleys. He believes this situation corresponds neither to Casablanca’s status nor to the financial resources allocated to collection and cleaning.

The officials present were notably questioned about the disruptions that appeared after the expiration of several delegated management contracts. This transition period would have directly affected the quality of service in certain areas.

Mohamed Mhidia, however, refused to allow the change of service providers to serve as justification. The arrival of new companies following the international call for tenders should, according to him, take place without interrupting the normal functioning of public service.

Companies now monitored daily

The wali reportedly directed direct criticism at companies already present in the old contracts and renewed in the new system. He asked them to strictly respect their commitments and the specifications signed with the municipality.

Mixed commissions will be established under the supervision of governors. They must inspect different neighborhoods daily, particularly densely populated areas and points where waste regularly accumulates.

These teams must also establish periodic reports on the work carried out by each company. The authorities thus intend to identify failures and hold accountable the service providers who do not fulfill their obligations.

The stated objective is to quickly eliminate problem areas, restore the level of cleanliness observed in recent months, and prevent the implementation of new contracts from resulting in further service deterioration.
