Casablanca Tightens COVID-19 Measures as Cases Surge Ahead of Eid al-Adha

The Ministry of the Interior intends to crack down to avoid an epidemiological relapse. Following the instructions of the minister last week, calling on prefects and law enforcement to tighten controls, the police are multiplying patrols to enforce preventive measures. An awareness-raising session is planned in Casablanca where contamination is dangerously increasing.

The alert is at its maximum in Casablanca. The Covid 19 reproduction rate is on a sharp rise in the city due to a total relaxation of barrier measures by the population.

In recent days, the city has faced a disregard for precautionary measures, at the forefront of which is the wearing of protective masks and the observance of physical distancing, particularly with the approach of Eid al-Adha marked by public and family gatherings.

Faced with this drift, night patrols in many streets of the economic capital, particularly in working-class neighborhoods, shops, and cafes, are being multiplied in order to restore "discipline" among professionals after the observed "relaxation".

With the approach of Eid el Kebir, instructions have also been given to citizens asking them to avoid rush hours in the Souks and to respect the current health measures in order to avoid a disaster.

To this end, the Ministry of the Interior has mobilized its agents to fine offenders of health measures, particularly with regard to the wearing of protective masks, in accordance with the decree relating to the state of health emergency. The authority’s agents also ensure the observance of mask wearing in public transport, particularly buses.

Given the current epidemiological situation in the country and in light of the Delta variant which continues to gain ground, the authority’s agents have proceeded to raise awareness among citizens about the organization of parties and weddings, calling on them to avoid them in these critical times or at least to respect the barrier measures.
