Marrakech's Jemaa El Fna Square Hosts COVID-19 Awareness Campaign Amid Rising Cases

The return of entertainment to Jemaa El Fna has prompted civil society associations to organize a large awareness-raising campaign for citizens on the need to strictly observe preventive measures against the pandemic of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) on Sunday evening.

The initiative comes from the Coalition of Associations of the Old Medina of Marrakech, in close collaboration with the local authorities. Faced with the increase in cases of contamination in recent weeks, associations thought that carrying out an awareness campaign in a place like Jemaa El Fna, which attracts so many people, could help convince many people. The objective is to alert the people of Marrakech and visitors to the dangers that any relaxation or laxity in the observance of preventive measures can entail.

Thus, in their awareness-raising messages, the organizers criss-crossed different corners of the mythical Jemaa El Fna square to call on citizens to get vaccinated, to avoid crowds and unnecessary gatherings. During this campaign, masks and disinfectants were distributed to visitors to the square, and citizens were called upon to scrupulously respect the barrier gestures, particularly physical distancing.

Abdelhak Belkhadir, president of the Association of Merchants and Craftsmen of the Souk Jdid of the Jamaâ El-Fna Square, in a statement to MAP, said he appreciated the initiative, calling on his peers and visitors to support the authorities so that Morocco reaches the much-sought-after collective immunity.
