Casablanca’s $4 Million Cemetery Upgrade Sparks Controversy

The municipal council of the city of Casablanca has decided to allocate nearly 40 million dirhams for the renovation and modernization of the Al Rahma cemetery. An amount that is causing controversy.
This amount of 37 million dirhams should be used in particular for the installation of surveillance cameras and illuminated signage, for landscaping work and for the purchase of six electric vehicles to facilitate the movement of visitors to the cemetery. The project aims to strengthen the accessibility and security of this public space and to improve the quality of the services provided.
However, the project has sparked a lively controversy. Some municipal councilors and Casablancans consider this amount exorbitant. They disapprove of such a large budget being allocated for the rehabilitation of the Al Rahma cemetery, while the surrounding populations are demanding the construction of schools, the development of roads and the renewal of public lighting. The opponents of this project have asked for investigations to be carried out to shed light on this file.
