Casablanca Launches Wastewater Reuse Projects to Combat Water Scarcity

Major projects to reuse treated wastewater for irrigation of green spaces have been launched in Casablanca.

Alternatives to water scarcity. The local development company (SDL) Casa Baïa has launched three tenders for the installation of two pumping stations and a wastewater treatment plant as part of an integrated program to reuse treated wastewater for the irrigation of green spaces and golf courses in the municipality of Casablanca, according to Médias24. With a total budget of 98 MDH, the first contract covers the installation of a treated wastewater pumping station in Médiouna. The infrastructure will also be equipped with a supply network, a charging basin, and a storage basin for a budget of over 36 MDH. This contract also covers the installation of a supply network and a transfer network for the water from Médiouna to Casablanca, for an amount of 61.7 MDH.

The second contract concerns the construction of a pumping station for treated wastewater from the El Hank treatment plant and a transfer network to the green spaces. This project, which will be completed in four months, requires a financial envelope of 18.2 million dirhams. As for the third tender, it covers the design and construction work for a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). This contract is divided into two distinct phases: one related to the construction of the WWTP, from design to commissioning, and the other concerning the operation of the plant for a period of three years.

The launch of these contracts follows a circular from the Minister of the Interior. Abdelouafi Laftit instructed the walis and governors to take drastic measures to rationalize the use of drinking water, in a context of drought and scarcity of water resources. Among these measures, the prohibition of watering all green spaces and public gardens with conventional water.
