Casablanca Cuts Free Bus Service for Disabled, Sparking Protests

The new Casablanca urban transport provider, Alsa, has canceled the free bus service for people with disabilities. A demonstration is planned this week in front of the City Council.

After Rabat, the new delegated urban transport service, Alsa Maroc, has repeated a year later in Casablanca, depriving this social category of a right acquired for more than 30 years.

Treated with contempt in Alsa buses, this social category refuses to have the free bus service taken away from them, laments Hicham Mouchtaq, coordinator of the National Alliance for Peace for People with Disabilities. Some people have been forcibly taken to police stations.

To justify its decision, the Spanish provider claimed that the case of people with disabilities would not have been taken into account when signing the management contract with the City Council.

This is the first time, Mouchtaq specifies, that people with disabilities have experienced such a restriction. Of all the urban transport operators, Alsa is the only one to have canceled the free bus service.
