Casablanca Considers Metro System as City Expands Public Transit Options

After the upcoming commissioning of the busway, the city of Casablanca should be equipped with a Regional Express Network (RER) and a metro. What is the reality?
Nothing formal has been decided regarding the construction of a metro in Casablanca, assures a source at the Wilaya of Casablanca cited by Le360, adding that reflections continue to be carried out on the opportunity of such a project in the city. "The metro is an option among others. No formal study has been commissioned to date," it is specified.
A study carried out in 2008 and used as a basis for the development of the Urban Travel Plan (PDU) had mentioned this metro project for the first time, long before the idea of a tramway and a high-level bus service (BHNS) which was proposed in 2011. Wali Mohamed Mhidia wants to deepen the reflection on this project before commissioning a feasibility study, details the same source.
A committee will be set up to study the viability of the project. Its mission, to evaluate the technical and financial issues of this metro project in Casablanca. Several municipal councilors have told Le360 that they are unaware of this mega-project, the realization of which would require significant resources.
A RER will be developed in partnership with the National Railway Office (ONCF) and the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council, Nabila Rmili, the mayor of Casablanca, declared in February 2023, stressing that this project "will facilitate travel in Casablanca and with Mohammedia, Nouaceur and Médiouna. This will obviously require a colossal budget".
