Casablanca Plans Metro Feasibility Study Ahead of 2030 World Cup

The authorities of Casablanca plan to launch in the coming weeks a feasibility study of the metro project with a view to the 2030 World Cup jointly organized by Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
The start of these feasibility studies is scheduled for early May. The realization of the project should be entrusted to the Casablanca Transport Local Development Company, which will launch a call for tenders in due course to recruit foreign companies with proven experience in metro construction.
A first phase of the project will consist in connecting the new metro lines to the 6 tramway and busway lines of the city, indicate sources at Al Akhbar, adding that a second phase aiming at the extension of the metro lines will take place after the completion of the studies and the completion of the work on the layout of the metro network in the neighborhoods concerned.
The idea of a metro project in Casablanca was abandoned in 2014. The line was to connect the Sidi Moumen district to the Hassan II Mosque, over a distance of 15 kilometers. The municipal and Casablanca-Settat regional authorities had preferred the monorail, tramway and busway project, due to the significant costs required for the realization of the metro.
It took the arrival of the new governor, Mohamed Mehdiya, for the metro project to be brought back to the table. The municipal councilors insist on the need for the municipality to carry out this project with its own funds, rather than taking out a loan for this purpose.
