Canary Islands President to Visit Morocco, Aims to Revive Fuerteventura-Tarfaya Ferry Route

The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, announced on Wednesday that he will make a visit to Morocco after the summer season, accompanied by Canarian businessmen and politicians. The opportunity will be seized to negotiate the resumption of the maritime line between Fuerteventura and Tarfaya, closed since 2008.

The Canarian president told the press, after his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, that he will go to Rabat after the summer, once the Spanish-Moroccan agreement is "well activated". "The normalization of relations with Morocco is a good thing, as it will allow the resumption of trade relations between the Canary Islands and the kingdom and the strengthening of migration cooperation," Torres said.

The Vice-President of the Archipelago, Román Rodriguez (Nueva Canarias), who also participated in the exchanges, expressed the wish for the resumption of the maritime line between Fuerteventura and Tarfaya. The restoration of the maritime line with Morocco will allow the Canary Islands to recover a market that had to be stopped in 2008, after the stranding of the Naviera Armas Assalama ship off Tarfaya, according to Atlantico Hoy.
