New Maritime Route to Connect Morocco’s Tarfaya with Spain’s Canary Islands

After a slight delay, the process of selecting a shipping company for the operation of a mixed maritime line (passengers and goods) between the port of Tarfaya and one of the ports of the Canary Islands is coming to an end in a few days.
The name of the shipping company that will operate the link between Puerto del Rosario and Tarfaya will be known in a few days, inform sources close to the authorities in charge of the process launched in November by the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water.
The two shores are eagerly awaiting the start of this new line. Since the ferry Assalama ran aground on April 30, 2008 off Tarfaya, maritime links between the Canary Islands and Africa have been interrupted. However, freight lines have been organized from Agadir or Casablanca.
"This link will contribute to the economic and social development of the southern regions of the Kingdom, will help facilitate the movement of goods and passengers and reduce the duration of sea crossings between Morocco and the Canary Islands," the ministry said in a statement.
The duration of the operating authorization is set at 5 years, renewable once.
