CAF Boosts AFCON 2021 Prize Money by $1.85 Million, Winner to Receive $5 Million

The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided on Friday to increase the prize money for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2021) starting this Sunday in Cameroon. The prize pool has been increased by nearly two million dollars.
CAF has increased its prize money allocations for the Africa Cup of Nations by $1.85 million, according to a statement published on its official website on Friday. "This increase is in line with CAF’s commitment to rewarding the best performances and strengthening the status of its most prestigious competition, the Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations," the same source explains.
Thus, the winner of the 2021 AFCON will receive a check for $5 million (an increase of $500,000). As for the runner-up, he will leave with the sum of $2.75 million (an increase of $250,000). The teams that reach the semi-finals and those eliminated in the quarter-finals will earn $2.2 million (an increase of $200,000) and $1.175 million (an increase of $175,000) respectively.
The 2021 AFCON is taking place in Cameroon between January 9 and February 6, 2022. The kickoff will be given this Sunday at the Olembe stadium in Yaoundé.
