Benkirane Elected PJD Secretary General, Replacing El Otmani After Election Setback

The Party of Justice and Development (PJD) held an extraordinary congress in Bouznika on Saturday, at the end of which Abdelilah Benkirane was elected Secretary General of the Party. He thus succeeds Saâd Dine El Otmani who was unable to provide a comfortable majority to the PJD during the September 8 election.
Abdelilah Benkirane came out on top of the election for the position of Secretary General of the party, ahead of Abdelaziz El Omari and Abdellah Bouanou, the PJD announced on its official website.
The extraordinary congress of the Islamist formation took place in the presence of the members of the National Council with the participation by videoconference from the provincial and regional headquarters, of the other members of the party. In addition to the election of the party’s Secretary General, the delegates also focused on the presentation and adoption of the project to postpone the 9th National Congress.
It should be recalled that following the poor performance of the PJD in the September 8 election, the members of the PJD’s General Secretariat, led by El Othmani, had decided to submit their collective resignation, calling for the urgent holding of an extraordinary national congress. A decision by the Secretariat that comes within the framework of its "full political responsibility in the management of this stage," a statement had stressed.
