PJD Considers Benkirane’s Return as Leader After Election Defeat

A few days after its defeat in the legislative elections, the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) met on Saturday, September 18, in a national council. On this occasion, the Islamists set up a preparatory committee for the extraordinary congress and discussed the return of the former secretary general, Abdelilah Benkirane at the head of the party.
It was by 184 votes against 178 for Abdel Aziz Ammari, 142 votes for Abdel Haq Al Arabi and 118 for Nabil Chikhi that Jamaâ Maôatassim, outgoing mayor of Salé, was elected to head the preparatory committee of the extraordinary congress of the party. Mohamed Amkraz said that the members of the national council will have to discuss the future of the PJD and the return of Abdelilah Benkirane at the head of the political formation.
According to Mostafa Ibrahimi, what distinguishes the Islamist party is its internal democracy, and no one can run for leadership positions themselves. It is up to the extraordinary congress to decide. He believes that Benkirane will be the most able to lead the party during the coming period.
Pending the setting of the date of the next extraordinary congress, the Lamp party now belongs to the opposition.
