Belgium drops in Global Peace Index while Morocco climbs rankings

Belgium obtains an overall score of 1.608, compared to 1.887 for Morocco. A lower score corresponds to a higher level of peace, the European country remains clearly ahead of the Kingdom, with a gap of 44 places.

The Belgian decline is nonetheless marked. According to the Global Peace Index 2026, its score deteriorates by 4.8% in one year, an increase of 0.074 points. This is the strongest deterioration recorded among the 33 countries of Western and Central Europe.

This evolution stems mainly from the militarization sector, with Belgium’s score deteriorating by 10.9%. The report notes a 57% deterioration in the indicator concerning UN peacekeeping operations financing, 20.3% for military spending and 17.9% for weapons imports.

The authors link this evolution to the acceleration of Belgian defense efforts. The country nearly reached in 2025 the threshold of 2% of gross domestic product devoted to military spending, compared to 1.25% a year earlier. These figures do not mean that spending increased by exactly 20.3%: this proportion corresponds to the deterioration of the indicator used by the index.

Morocco is evolving in the opposite direction, but its progress must be put into perspective. The Kingdom gains three places and reaches 65th rank, while its score improves by only 0.001 points. The movement therefore reflects more Moroccan stability combined with changes in other countries than an important transformation of its situation.

In detail, Belgium maintains a clear advantage in safety and security, with a score of 1.695 compared to 1.995 for Morocco. It also performs better on ongoing conflicts, with 1.267 compared to 1.895. Morocco achieves a better result on militarization: 1.695 compared to 1.992 for Belgium.
