A Belgian tries to scam 80,000 euros from his insurance... his car was in Morocco!

A man from Walcourt was sentenced to 10 months in prison for attempting to scam 80,000 euros from his insurance by simulating the theft of his Mercedes-AMG C63.

The story begins in July 2018, when the defendant buys the powerful Mercedes under a leasing arrangement. But a few months later, on October 12, he reports the vehicle stolen to the police, claiming it disappeared from his girlfriend’s residence in Laneffe during the night.

The insurance company, smelling a trick, hires a private detective. Bingo! The latter discovers that one of the two sets of car keys is fake and that the vehicle’s location system was deactivated on September 26, six days before the alleged theft. As the cherry on top, the Mercedes is spotted crossing the Moroccan border on September 27, and has never come back out.

The driver of the sports car, identified and questioned, claims to have driven it to Morocco at the request of a Brussels resident, without knowing the contractor.

The Dinant Correctional Court was not fooled. The defendant, already known for attempted theft and fraudulent bankruptcy, was sentenced to 10 months in prison by default for attempted fraud.
