Morocco: Prison Sentence for Disrupting a Quran Class

The Correctional Court of Imintanout sentenced two people, a father and his son, to five months in prison and a fine of 2,000 dirhams each. They were prosecuted for preventing the holding of a Quran class.
The events took place on March 8 in the Ighil n’Tlghmt douar, in the province of Chichaoua. The accused went to a tent where a Quran memorization session was being held for girls. They assaulted the participants and overturned a table on which copies of the Quran were placed.
The case caused an uproar on social media. Internet users denounced an intolerable act, seen as an attack on freedom of worship, demanding sanctions commensurate with the violence perpetrated.
Alerted, the security forces opened an investigation that led to the arrest of the accused. They were then brought to justice and sentenced.
