Belgian Man Faces Prison for Faking Luxury Car Theft in Insurance Scam

The Namur (Belgium) public prosecutor’s office has requested 10 months in prison against a man who sent his luxury vehicle, a Mercedes-AMG C63, to Morocco, claiming it had been stolen in order to try to obtain a 80,000 euro indemnity from his insurer.

The defendant acquired this car on lease in July 2018. On October 12 of the same year, he reported the theft of the Mercedes-AMG C63 to the Walcourt police, reports La Dernière Heure. The luxury vehicle, worth 80,000 euros, would have disappeared while parked in the residence of his companion, in Laneffe, he specified in his statement to the police.

His insurance company called on the services of a private detective to investigate this strange theft. In his investigations, the latter discovered that one of the two sets of keys to the Mercedes handed over by the defendant is fake, that the vehicle’s location system was deactivated on September 26, 2018 and that the vehicle crossed the border of Morocco on September 27 "and never came out of it again".

"The man who was at the wheel returned to Belgium by plane. He was identified and questioned. He says he drove the car to Morocco, at the request of a Brussels resident, but did not know for whose account," details the lawyer for the insurance company. The defendant is known to the Charleroi police for attempted theft and fraudulent bankruptcy. The Namur public prosecutor’s office has requested 10 months in prison against him. The case will be heard on February 13.
