Prominent Antwerp Lawyer Faces Trial for Destructive Hit-and-Run Crash

Omar Souidi, a renowned lawyer from Antwerp, is currently on trial for a hit-and-run road accident. The incident, which occurred last year in Schilde, has drawn attention due to the notoriety of the defendant and the circumstances surrounding the event.

The tragedy unfolded on the morning of March 11, when Mr. Souidi, driving his Land Rover, violently collided with two parked vehicles. The impacts were such that the two cars, a Land Rover Discovery and a Mercedes GLS, were completely destroyed. Following the collision, Souidi’s vehicle hit a streetlight, causing it to fall. However, the lawyer chose to leave the scene on foot, leaving the chaos behind.

The police investigation was hampered by the inability to determine whether the lawyer was under the influence of illegal substances or alcohol, as he was not present to undergo the necessary tests and did not make himself available when the police went to his home.

In a television interview, Mr. Souidi confessed to having fallen asleep at the wheel, admitting an overconfidence in his ability to handle the situation. This statement will likely be a central element of the trial. Omar Souidi faces heavy penalties: he risks a fine ranging from 1,600 to 16,000 euros, a driving ban of eight days to five years, and a prison sentence of up to six months.

However, one detail is worth noting. Omar Souidi has already reimbursed the material damage caused by the accident. No victim has initiated civil proceedings against him, which could influence the judgment.
